Medical Platinum Plating 1

Medical Devices…

…often require functional metal coatings that deliver outstanding corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and electrical performance. Platinum plating is an ideal finish for many medical applications due to its inherent chemical inertness, non-reactivity with bodily fluids, and excellent durability over long-term use.

Medical device components typically have complex geometries and stringent performance requirements. A high-quality coating process must achieve uniform coverage and strong adhesion while meeting traceability, repeatability, and regulatory expectations. ProPlate’s medical platinum plating solutions are engineered to meet the exacting standards of the medical device industry, including ISO 13485:2016 quality systems and FDA regulatory expectations.

Our robust metallizing processes are thoroughly designed and maintained to ensure the highest quality standards. Medical Device Quality System: ISO 13485:2016 Certified

Platinum is an incredibly useful and practical metal used in the medical device manufacturing industry.

Catheters

Catheters are one of the most common medical devices used today for delivering medication to specific areas, performing minimally invasive surgical procedures. Most catheters can benefit from using platinum in different ways. Platinum can be used as electrode material in Electrophysiology Catheters to monitor and measure the activity of certain cardiac muscles, or to ablate and stimulate anatomy within the body. Platinum guide-wire can also be used to guide and maneuver catheters to certain treatment sites. Doctors can use a Platinum marker band at the distal end of a catheter under radiographic imaging to see and operate on an area without an invasive incision.

Cardiac Implants

Pacemaker components, heart valve splices, and coronary stents often times include Platinum components such as marker bands, leads, and electrodes. Due to its high biocompatibility, using Platinum reduces the risk that the body will reject an implant. Platinum’s ductility serves as the perfect solution for making the extremely small wires that connect all the tiny electronics within a pacemaker.

Neuromodulation Devices

Platinum can be used for the external structures of certain devices such as neuromodulation devices. These devices are developed to send electrical signals to the central nervous system. This helps treat and manage chronic neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Platinum allows for electrical conductivity and a metallic layer on the external structure of the device.

Why Platinum Matters in Medical Devices

Platinum offers a unique combination of properties that make it especially valuable for medical device applications:

  • Biocompatibility: Platinum is highly inert and does not cause adverse reactions when in contact with tissues or bodily fluids, making it suitable for implantable applications.

  • Corrosion resistance: Its resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments, including sterilization and body chemistry, enhances device longevity.

  • Electrical conductivity: Platinum’s stable, high conductivity makes it well-suited for electrodes and signal-transmitting components.

  • MRI compatibility: Platinum’s non-magnetic characteristics help support MRI-safe components where imaging needs must be balanced with performance.

  • Radiopacity: Dense atomic structure improves visibility under X-ray and fluoroscopy, which is critical for implant placement and monitoring.

Specialized Capabilities for Complex Geometries

Many medical device components feature intricate designs, fine features, and challenging surface profiles. ProPlate®’s proprietary platinum electroplating techniques are engineered to offer:

  • Uniform surface coverage even on microscopic features

  • High throwing power for deep recesses and internal channels

  • Controlled thickness and tolerance for precision instrumentation

  • Selective plating options where masking or functional zones are needed

These capabilities ensure consistent performance and meet the mechanical, electrical, and regulatory requirements of complex medical assemblies.

Common Medical Platinum Plating Applications

Platinum plating enhances performance in a variety of medical device categories:

  • Implantable electrodes (e.g., pacemaker and defibrillator contacts)

  • Neurostimulation and electrophysiology sensors

  • MRI-compatible components and leads

  • Catheter electrodes and signal paths for electrophysiology mapping

  • Radiopaque markers for interventional devices

  • Diagnostic sensors exposed to biological fluids

These coatings are selected when the highest levels of stability, longevity, and patient safety are required.

Platinum Properties

Platinum provides exceptionally uniform coverage over complex geometries and fine features, producing a dense, continuous plated surface. Its strong throwing power allows platinum to coat recessed areas and intricate details effectively, helping to minimize porosity and reduce the risk of pinholes that could impact performance or durability.

Because platinum deposits are hard, stable, and highly resistant to corrosion and chemical attack, platinum is well suited as a functional finish layer in demanding environments. Platinum maintains its surface integrity at elevated temperatures and under repeated use, and its smooth, durable finish supports long-term reliability in applications requiring wear resistance, conductivity, and biocompatibility.
